Kamala Harris: The Ultimate DEI Hire

Kamala Harris, the 49th Vice President of the United States, is often promoted as a trailblazer for being the first black female VP in American history.[1][2]

However, immutable characteristics such as race and gender do not qualify a person for a job. Kamala's appointment to the VP slot by Joe Biden is emblematic of the diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives pushed by the left, prioritizing identity characteristics over individual merit.

While running for the 2020 presidential election, Joe Biden pledged to pick a woman as his Vice President. Soon after, Biden specified that he was considering four black women for his running mate.[3][4]

Rather than open the field to the most qualified people, regardless of gender or skin color, Joe Biden purposefully narrowed his choices based on identity in order to pander to the woke left.

A closer look at Kamala's career trajectory paints a clear picture that her ascent to the second-highest office in the land is due more to strategic maneuvering and identity politics, than to genuine merit and ability.

The Willie Brown Connection

Kamala Harris's relationship with Willie Brown, the former mayor of San Francisco, is often cited as the starting point of her political career. Brown, who was technically married but not living with his wife at the time, admitted to having an affair with Harris in the 1990s. During this period, Brown was one of the most powerful political figures in California, wielding considerable influence in state and local politics.[5]

Harris's relationship with Brown played a significant role in her early career. She was 29 when she began dating Brown, who was 60 years old. In 1994, Brown appointed Harris to the California Unemployment Insurance Appeals Board, which came with a $97,000 annual salary. Kamala resigned 6 months later, at which point Brown appointed her to the California Medical Assistance Commission, which met only 2 times per month and paid her $72,000 per year. Kamala received the position with no medical background or related work experience.[6]

In a letter to the San Francisco Chronicle, Willie Brown acknowledged that he had a role in Kamala's early career. "Yes, we dated. It was more than 20 years ago. Yes, I may have influenced her career by appointing her to two state commissions when I was Assembly speaker,” he wrote.[7]

Harris only dated Brown for about a year, but the love affair provided her with both a platform and the financial stability to pursue a career in politics. Additional perks of dating Brown included a gifted BMW, traveling to Paris, and attending the Academy Awards.[8]

The fact that Harris was sleeping with a married man who held significant political power, raises ethical questions about the influence of personal relationships on professional opportunities. Harris would have never received appointments to well-compensated state commissions without dating Brown, who wielded considerable political influence as the Speaker of the California State Assembly.

San Francisco District Attorney

In 2003, Harris was elected as the District Attorney (DA) of San Francisco. Her campaign website claimed that she had "prosecuted hundreds of serious and violent felonies" during her career.[9][10]

However, veteran criminal defense attorney and then-opponent, Bill Fazio, questioned Kamala's professional record during a debate.[11]

"How many cases have you tried? Can you tell us how many serious felonies you have tried? Can you tell us one?" Fazio asked Harris

"I've tried about 50 cases, Mr. Fazio, and it's about leadership," Harris responded.

By her own admission, Kamala Harris inflated her prosecutorial record to appear tough on crime while running for District Attorney.

Ultimately, Kamala Harris defeated incumbent Terence Hallinan, who was weakened by a lackluster performance in office. She would go on to adopt her predecessor's progressive policies, catering to her own progressive beliefs and the far left politics of San Francisco.[12]

While Harris's campaign capitalized on Hallinan's vulnerabilities, her tenure as DA was not without criticism. A San Francisco crime lab scandal forced Harris to throw out or not charge 550 cases due to possible evidence tampering.[13]

A superior court judge strongly criticized the failures of Harris's office, writing that "there were significant errors and misjudgments" by the District Attorney's Office.[14]

While she was DA, Kamala Harris spearheaded a controversial effort to criminalize the parents of truant school children, a move that disproportionately affects low-income families.[15]

She bragged and laughed about jailing parents at an event hosted by the Commonwealth Club in 2010:

The fact that she laughs while describing her own perpetration of government overreach into citizens' private lives is telling. Harris clearly relishes in her power as a public official and is unafraid to wield that power as she sees fit.

In one particularly heartbreaking example, Harris's campaign against truancy got the mother of a child with sickle cell anemia arrested due to school absences.[16]

Despite these failures and criticisms, Harris leveraged her position as DA to propel herself into the next stage of her career.

California Attorney General

Harris's election as Attorney General (AG) of California in 2010 was another milestone in her career. Her path to victory was eased by the fact that she faced a relatively weak opponent in Steve Cooley, the Republican DA of Los Angeles County.

Cooley's campaign was marred by strategic missteps, including his failure to secure endorsements from key law enforcement organizations that traditionally supported Republican candidates. Still, Harris eked out a victory by only a half percent margin.[17]

Some questions remain about the outcome of that election due to California's lenient voting procedures. Voting started one month out and Cooley held a comfortable lead on the eve of election day. But later, a full three weeks after the election, Harris was declared the winner.[18]

In running her campaign for AG, Harris benefited from high profile endorsements, including President Barak Obama.[19]

Later, after she won, Obama praised Kamala's looks at a fundraising event in 2013, saying that she "happens to be by far the best-looking attorney general in the country".[20]

The Obama connection clearly raised Kamala's political profile. She was even dubbed the "female Barak Obama".[21]

The Democrats had found their next rising star, and she checked key identity boxes (black, female) that the progressive movement loves to brag about.

As AG, Harris focused on issues like consumer protection and environmental justice, but her record was mixed. Harris faced backlash for her office's questionable practices that were used in wrongful conviction cases, as well as misconduct within her department, including a state prosecutor who falsified a transcript of a defendant’s confession.[22][23]

2020 Presidential Campaign

Harris's 2020 presidential campaign is widely regarded as a failure. Despite initial media enthusiasm and a strong debate performance where she challenged Joe Biden on his record of opposing federally mandated busing, her campaign failed to gain traction. By December 2019, Harris's polling numbers had plummeted to low single digits, and she dropped out of the race before the primary vote in her home state of California.[24][25]

Harris's inability to connect with voters was evident in her campaign's collapse. She struggled to articulate a clear message, often shifting her positions on key issues like healthcare.[26]

Selection for Vice President

Despite her poor performance in the primaries, Joe Biden selected Harris as his running mate in 2020, a decision that was driven by her identity as a Black woman, rather than by her record or political competence.

He stated during a roundtable discussion, “Whomever I pick, preferably it will be someone who was of color and/or a different gender.”[27]

The irony of this choice was not lost on observers, who noted that Biden, facing pressure to choose a female and minority candidate, ultimately selected someone who had publicly questioned his racial sensitivity during the debates.

Lackluster Record as VP

Since assuming office, Harris's tenure as Vice President has been characterized by a lack of tangible accomplishments. The official White House website jumps right into her “achievements” on her Vice President page:

“As Vice President, she has worked to bring people together to advance opportunity, deliver for families, and protect fundamental freedoms across the country. She has led the fight for the freedom of women to make decisions about their own bodies, the freedom to live safe from gun violence, the freedom to vote, and the freedom to drink clean water and breathe clean air.”[1]

Her most significant assignment was to address the root causes of migration from Central America as the Biden administration's "Border Czar." This informal title was referenced just about everywhere in media at the time, although later Democrats and their allies in the left-wing media tried to claim she was never the "Border Czar".[28]

Regardless of her official title, Harris was tasked by Biden to be the point person for all immigration issues at the southern border. Her utter failure to bring about any meaningful change to the disaster of illegal immigration into the United States garnered mass criticism, and would come back to haunt her during her run for President in 2024.[29][30][31]

As Vice President, Harris agreed to lead the administration's $42 billion effort to rollout high speed internet access for rural America. However, 3 years later, not a single home has been connected.[32]

Finally, Harris's public appearances have been marked by what critics describe as "word salads." Her speeches and interviews often include awkward, confusing statements that have become fodder for social media ridicule.[33]

Phrases like "unburdened by what has been" have been mocked for their lack of coherence and substance. These public blunders have only reinforced the perception that Harris is out of her depth in her current role.

Conclusion

Kamala Harris's rise to the Vice Presidency is a case study in failing upward, propelled by modern identity politics. While her supporters tout her as a symbol of progress and diversity, her record demonstrates an incompetent and unqualified political hack.

From her early relationship with Willie Brown to her lackluster performance as Vice President, Harris's career raises important questions about prioritizing identity over merit in American politics.
